The pediatric dentistry or pedodontics is, unquestionably, the vastest of all the specialties or dentistry. It is the branch concerned with providing comprehensive dental care and treatment in children and laying down foundation of healthy dentation and orofacial complex from prenatal period through adolescence. Because of its vast area it is difficult to define exact boundaries of pedodontics with continuous development and advancements. Although, pedodontics has borrowed heavily from other disciplines of dentistry, yet it is a discipline unto itself. The child has to be treated differently from adult and infect modes of management are extremely age specific and every patient to patient since every child presents unique behavior in dental operatory. Thus, in changing scenario there has been tremendous increase in the scope of pedolontics. Prevention and behavioral modifications are two distinctive characteristics of pedodontics which keep it aloof of other specialties of dentistry. Pedodontics encompasses a variety of treatment modalities which includes extraction, decay, interception and maintenance of arch integrity due to tooth loss or decay. Restorative techniques, pulpal therąpy, space maintenance, preventive and interceptive orthodontic procedures are main themes of the specialities. In brief, this specialty handles majority of the dental needs of child patients.
